My maternal grandmother Mary Mackey was born in County Kerry Ireland but when she was only five years old she and her younger sister Bridget were admitted to St Johns Industrial and Boarding school (orphanage). Their father Patrick Mackey had died the previous year. It is uncertain what happened to the girls mother but one of their older brothers, Martin, went to live with their maternal grandparents at their farm in Park, Shannonharbour, County Offaly.
The school reports for my grandmother were good from year to year. "A very bright child, docile, obedient, willing and anxious, very industrious. She remained in the orphanage until her discharge in 1906. She then went to work for the sisters of mercy at their convent in Borrisokane, where she remained up until her marriage to my grandfather Jack Loftus in May of 1911.
Mary was a devout catholic and brought her children up to be good catholics too. She said her prayers every night and kept all her prayer books by her bedside. She did not like vanity and as a child I remember being scolded by her for posing at the mirror. She had funny little sayings such as, "God made man, man made money, God made the bees and the bees made honey. God made the devil, the devil made sin, so God made a hole and pushed the devil in." The other little saying I remember her most for was "God bless us and save us cried Big Mrs Davis I never thought herring was fish!" She had a beautiful singing voice and her favourite place for singing was in the kitchen when she was cooking or cleaning. The song that sticks in my memory was "I don't want to play in your yard".
After their marriage Jack and Mary moved to the Ardoyne area of Belfast and their first child my uncle James (Jamsie) was born there. Mary worked in the textile mills in Belfast and there is a family story about that period. The story goes that a gun was held to her head by a member of the predominantly protestant work force. My grandmother was heavily pregnant at the time but she stood her ground and they backed down.
The family moved to Scotland during the First World War and Jack went to work in the shipyards on the Clyde. My grandmother never returned to Ireland, not even for a holiday. She had seven children in all including my mother Winnie. Two of her children died in infancy, Bridget and Joseph.[CASSID~2.FTW]

Patrick Mackey worked on the railways all over Ireland. He was already a widower when he met Mary O'Rourke and was at least thirty years older than her. They were married by Father Monaghan in the Catholic Chapel of Cloghan on the 18th September 1883 and the witnesses at their marriage were, James Mullins and Mary Barr.
