      MRS ANNIE KELLY
      TOWER HILL, BORRISOKANE (1977)
The late Mrs Anne Kelly of Tower Hill, Borrisokane County Tipperary was one of the oldest residents of the town. Daughter of the late James and Mary Loftus, The Square Borrisokane she was the last surviving member of that family and her passing seevers the link with the district of one of its oldest and most respectable families.
Born towards the end of the last century Mrs Kelly loved to recount the early period of her childhood some of which she spent with her family in White Abbey near Belfast of which she had vivid memories especially of the troubles and conflict there. She returned to her native Borrisokane with her parents and family while in her early teens.
She had up to a short time before her death an excellent memory. She could recall the death of Queen Victoria, the reigh of Edward VII and other happenings of historical interest. She remebered being taken to see a notorious slave ship complete with chains which was on view early in the twentieth century in Belfast, also she recalled being taken by her brothers to see "Buffalo Bill" when he toured with his circus in the Northern Capital. Fresh in her memory wa the first World War in which three of her brothers fought. The youngest Joseph being killed in action in Ypres Belgium. Her brother Martin died several years after the war from teh effect of gas poisoning and the third brother William received a medal for bravery in the field.
She could vividly describe the Easter Week Rebellion and the terrors of the civil war when she was a young mother with four young children. Listening to her was like entering another world another era.
Her family had a long connection with Borrisokane. Her father James Loftus owned a small wood turning factory there, he was also a skilled woodcarver, and some of his work and his lathe are now in the National Museum Kildare Street. His mother was a Miss Reid also from the district.
Mrs Kellys maternal grandmother was a kinswoman of "Eva of the Nation" and she recalled being taken as a chid to see Mrs O'Doherty by her mother when Mrs O'Doherty returned to Ireland from Queensland Australia.
