  • Notes
    • James Cassidy was my grandfather's eldest brother. He was an apprentice plasterer for a while but he went to England towards the end of the 1880's. In the 1891 census James Rice Cassidy was living at 116 Belle Street Cottage, Castleton, Rochdale Lancashire. He gave his occupation as Actor. 1891 was the year that the first telephone link between London & Paris took place and primary school education was made free and compulsary.
The lady who owned Belle Street Cottage, Catherine Green, had a son called Joseph who also worked in the theatre. James may have been working at the Theatre Royal in Rochdale . Just a few years later this theatre was almost destroyed by fire as reported in the Rochdale Observer (28th January 1894):
"Fire almost destroyed the theatre by Saturday morning, nothing left but a mass of charred ruins, which description applies to orchestra, orchestra stalls, pit, circle, crush-room and gallery. In fact everything in front of the stage and the whole of the roof has disappeared, but the circle and gallery are still supported by pillars."
In the 1891 census James's future wife Lilian Cheetham was living with her father and brother at 27 High Street Huddersfield in Yorkshire. He married Lilian also a thespian, in 1895 in Leeds. IN THE 1901 CENSUS THEY WERE LIVING AT 220 HOPE STREET GLASGOW OCCUPPATIONS ACTOR/COMEDIAN. At the time the couple were appearing in the "God of War" at the "Grand Theatre Glasgow".
He had quite a prolific and a prestigious career as outlined below and his name appears in the Who's Who of the Theatre "J Rice Cassidy Actor". He even appeared on Broadway. In 1913 he and his wife Lillian sailed from Southhampton to New York. James was appearing in the Broadway production of General John Reagan and on the ship's manifest he gives his destination as The Players Club 16 Gramercy Park, New York. The Players Club was founded by the American Shakespearian actor Edwin Booth whose dream it was to establish an actors' club, where professionals could mingle with American men of industry and goodwill.
"We do not mingle enough with minds that influence the world," Booth said of his fellow actors,"We should measure ourselves through personal contact with outsiders … I want my club to be a place where actors are away from the glamour of the theatre."
James Rice Cassidy died in London on the 11th May 1927.
