321 Notes for Lilian Clare Cheetham:
Lillian Clara Cassidy Playwright, Actress and Mad Woman
This remarkable lady had both an amazing and tragic life, she was born Lillian Clara Cheetham in Huddersfield in 1874 the only daughter of Robert and Mary Ann Cheetham. She had one full brother James Robert and two half brothers William and James Calvert Wilson. Lillian’s mother died when she was very young and she lived with her father who was employed as a plush silk cutter. Her brother James started off working as a draper’s assistant although he later owned his own wholesale drapery business.
By 1895 Lillian had met and married a young Scottish actor James Rice Cassidy. It was to be a highly successful partnership and one that spanned over thirty years until Rice Cassidy’s death in 1927.
They started their own theatre company and toured all over Britain. They even made it as far as Broadway New York. James was not the most handsome of men and was essentially a comedian /character actor. Almost all his roles reflected this and he often played the bumbling fool, the servant or the village priest.
Lillian was not only the leading lady, she also wrote many of their plays. Her plays were mostly melodramas but often topical reflecting issues pertinent to the time they lived in. “In Holy Russia” for instance Lillian’s character Renee Rubinoff is being transported to Siberia with her parents when she escapes and joins a gang of would be revolutionaries’ intent on blowing up the Czar. This play was written and performed a good many years before the Russian revolution and although it was essentially a comedy the humour was most definitely of a satirical nature. They also performed other writer’s plays and one of their most successful was “The God of War” by Charles Whitlock. This was yet another topical piece about the Cuban American War. The God of War played to packed houses and was performed all over the country over a ten year period.
After thirty two years of marriage James died in London leaving Lillian very much alone. She returned to her native Huddersfield and lived with her brother James for a while. In April of 1930 she was admitted to Deanhouse institution which was basically a poor house with an infirmary attached. She was suffering from confusional insanity and obviously her brother could no longer cope with her condition. The illness was chronic and it appears she was suffering from manic depression as she would have periods of elation and then suddenly become very morose and depressed. She was transferred to Storthes Hall Psychiatric Hospital in June the same year and was to spend the last fourteen years of her life there.
Lillian’s brother James committed suicide in August 1931. He had been found dead in the street having consumed a toxic substance with corroded his throat and intestines. Just six weeks before his death he had written to the hospital requesting that his sister be allowed her own clothes and her trinkets. They agreed to her having some of her clothing but refused to let her have her trinkets. He had also requested more regular visits with his sister. The Medical Superintendent wrote back to James agreeing to more visits but added that “frequent visiting does not assist the patient but under the circumstances you can come once a fortnight, but not oftener, on any of the visiting days“
